This study investigated the ameliorating effects of high-energy and high-amino acid (HEHA) diets on heat stress (HS) in yellow-feathered broilers. Broilers aged 35 d were randomly assigned to 3 groups: control and HS groups fed the basic normal diet, and the HEHA group fed the HEHA diet (basal diet + 100 kcal/kg AME + 15 % DAAs). The HS and HEHA groups were exposed to cyclic HS (30 ± 1 to 34 ± 1 ℃) for 2 wk, while the control group was maintained at 26 ± 1 ℃. The results indicated that the HEHA diet significantly alleviated HS-induced feed intake and body weight loss. HEHA feeding mitigated the increase in body temperature during HS. Compared with observations in the HS group, the HEHA diet reduced the levels of ALT, Alb, and corticosterone in the serum and downregulated the gene expression of HSP27 and HSP60 in the liver. Moreover, the HEHA group showed higher GSH-px activity in the serum and SOD and GSH-Px activity in the jejunal mucosa than that of the HS group. HEHA supplementation also reduced MDA levels in the liver. In conclusion, the HEHA diet improved the production performance of broilers under HS by increasing their antioxidant capacities. These findings suggest an effective strategy to combat HS in poultry production.

Sodium alginate (SA) is a marine polysaccharide biomass material that is environmentally friendly and exhibits color-changing properties under certain conditions. In this study, we have discovered sodium alginate solution to be chromogenic under four conditions, namely alkali-chromogenic, thermo-chromogenic, force-chromogenic and photo-chromogenic. Under simple strong alkaline conditions, sodium alginate forms clusters of blue light-absorbing chromogenic aggregates, which exhibit a bright yellow color at a certain size. Under different temperature conditions, SA shows varying shades of yellow, and the color tends to stabilize after 48 h of resting. The aggregates can be dispersed by stirring, which changes SA from yellow to colorless. The yellow color can then be recovered after resting. Additionally, exposure to sunlight can cause the yellow SA to fade, but the color can be restored by reheating. Therefore, the force-chromogenic and photo-chromogenic properties are reversible. This makes it a promising material for use in color-developing and indicating materials. It is expected to become a sodium alginate cluster pigment with broad application prospects in the future.

Laccases (EC 1.10.3.2) are oxidoreductases that belong to the multicopper oxidase subfamily and are classified as yellow/white or blue according to their absorption spectrum. Yellow laccases are more useful for industrial processes since they oxidize nonphenolic compounds in the absence of a redox mediator and stand out for being more stable and functional under extreme conditions. This study aimed to characterize a new laccase that was predicted to be present in the genome of Chitinophaga sp. CB10 - Lac_CB10. Lac_CB10, with a molecular mass of 100.06 kDa, was purified and characterized via biochemical assays using guaiacol as a substrate. The enzyme demonstrated extremophilic characteristics, exhibiting relative activity under alkaline conditions (CAPS buffer pH 10.5) and thermophilic conditions (80-90°C), as well as maintaining its activity above 50% for 5 h at 80°C and 90°C. Furthermore, Lac_CB10 presented a spectral profile typical of yellow laccases, exhibiting only one absorbance peak at 300 nm (at the T2/T3 site) and no peak at 600 nm (at the T1 site). When lignin was degraded using copper as an inducer, 52.27% of the material was degraded within 32 h. These results highlight the potential of this enzyme, which is a novel yellow laccase with thermophilic and alkaline activity and the ability to act on lignin. This enzyme could be a valuable addition to the biorefinery process. In addition, this approach has high potential for industrial application and in the bioremediation of contaminated environments since these processes often occur at extreme temperatures and pH values. IMPORTANCE: The characterization of the novel yellow laccase, Lac_CB10, derived from Chitinophaga sp. CB10, represents a significant advancement with broad implications. This enzyme displays exceptional stability and functionality under extreme conditions, operating effectively under both alkaline (pH 10.5) and thermophilic (80-90°C) environments. Its capability to maintain considerable activity over extended periods, even at high temperatures, showcases its potential for various industrial applications. Moreover, its distinctive ability to efficiently degrade lignin-demonstrated by a significant 52.27% degradation within 32 h-signifies a promising avenue for biorefinery processes. This newfound laccase's characteristics position it as a crucial asset in the realm of bioremediation, particularly in scenarios involving contamination at extreme pH and temperature levels. The study's findings highlight the enzyme's capacity to address challenges in industrial processes and environmental cleanup, signifying its vital role in advancing biotechnological solutions.

CASE HISTORY: A line of 25 cull cows were all found to have ulcerative lesions of the tongue at post-mortem inspection in a New Zealand slaughter plant. A further 9 of 10 cows inspected at the farm of origin had similar oral lesions. There were no other clinical signs or indicators of ill-health observed at ante-mortem inspection in the abattoir or on the farm. The cows had been fed baleage for 3 weeks prior to slaughter, made from pasture in paddocks heavily contaminated with yellow bristle grass (Setaria pumila). CLINICAL FINDINGS: There was extensive and deep transverse linear ulceration in the lingual fossa immediately rostral to the torus linguae. At histological examination, full-thickness ulceration of the stratified squamous epithelium was observed with a bed of disorganised collagenous tissue and extensive mixed inflammatory infiltrate extending into the sub-epithelial connective tissue and skeletal muscle. Barbed plant fragments were embedded in both the superficial and deeper areas of inflammation. Detailed examination of the baleage also found that yellow bristle grass seedheads were present. DIAGNOSIS: Based on the presence of barbed plant material in the tongue and yellow bristle grass seeds in the baleage, a diagnosis of ulcerative stomatitis associated with yellow bristle grass was made. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Clinicians should be aware of the potential for hay or baleage contaminated with yellow bristle grass to cause oral lesions in cattle.

Nonpoint source pollution (NPSP) has always been the dominant threat to regional waters. Based on empirical models of the revised universal soil loss equation and the phosphorus index, an NPSP risk assessment model denoted as SL-NPSRI was developed. The surface soil pollutant loss was estimated by simulating the rain-runoff topographic process, and the influence of path attenuation was quantified. A case study in the Yellow River Delta and corresponding field surveys of soil pollutants and water quality showed that the established model can be applied to evaluate the spatial heterogeneity of NPSP. NPSP usually occurs during high-intensity rainfall periods and in larger estuaries. Summer rainfall increased pollutant transport into the sea from late July to mid-August and caused estuarine dilution. Higher NPSP risks often correspond to coastal areas with lower vegetation coverage, higher soil erodibility, and higher soil pollutant concentrations. Agricultural NPSP originating from cropland significantly increase the pollutant fluxes. Therefore, area-specific land use management and vegetation coverage improvement, and temporal-specific strategies can be explored for NPSP control during source-transport hydrological processes. This research provides a novel insight for coastal NPSP simulations by comprehensively analyzing the soil erosion process and its associated pollutant loss effects, which can be useful for targeted spatiotemporal solutions.

Leaf color is one of the most important phenotypic features in horticultural crops and directly related to the contents of photosynthetic pigments. Most leaf color mutants are determined by the altered chlorophyll or carotenoid, which can be affected by light quality and intensity. Our previous study obtained a Chinese cabbage yellow cotyledon mutant that exhibited obvious yellow phenotypes in the cotyledons and the new leaves. However, the underlying mechanisms in the formation of yellow cotyledons and leaves remain unclear. In this study, the Chinese cabbage yellow cotyledon mutant 19YC-2 exhibited obvious difference in leaf color and abnormal chloroplast ultrastructure compared to the normal green cotyledon line 19GC-2. Remarkably, low-intensity light treatment caused turn-green leaves and a significant decrease in carotenoid content in 19YC-2. RNA-seq analysis revealed that the pathways of photosynthesis antenna proteins and carotenoid biosynthesis were significantly enriched during the process of leaf color changes, and many differentially expressed genes related to the two pathways were identified to respond to different light intensities. Remarkably, BrPDS and BrLCYE genes related to carotenoid biosynthesis showed significantly higher expression in 19YC-2 than that in 19GC-2, which was positively related to the higher carotenoid content in 19YC-2. In addition, several differentially expressed transcription factors were also identified and highly correlated to the changes in carotenoid content, suggesting that they may participate in the regulatory pathway of carotenoid biosynthesis. These findings provide insights into the molecular mechanisms of leaf color changes in yellow cotyledon mutant 19YC-2 of Chinese cabbage.

A key approach in developing green chemistry involves converting solar energy into chemical energy of biomolecules through photocatalysis. Photocatalysis can facilitate the regeneration of nicotinamide cofactors during redox processes. Nicotinamide cofactor biomimetics (NCBs) are economical substitutes for natural cofactors. Here, photocatalytic regeneration of NADH and reduced NCBs (NCBsred) using graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) was developed. The process involves g-C3N4 as the photocatalyst, Cp*Rh(bpy)H2O2+ as the electron mediator, and Triethanolamine as the electron donor, facilitating the reduction of NAD+ and various oxidative NCBs (NCBsox) under light irradiation. Notably, the highest reduction yield of 48.32 % was achieved with BANA+, outperforming the natural cofactor NAD+. Electrochemical analysis reveals that the reduction efficiency and capacity of cofactors relies on their redox potentials. Additionally, a coupled photo-enzymatic catalysis system was explored for the reduction of 4-Ketoisophorone by Old Yellow Enzyme XenA. Among all the NCBsox and NAD+, the highest conversion ratio of over 99 % was obtained with BANA+. After recycled for 8 times, g-C3N4 maintained over 93.6 % catalytic efficiency. The photocatalytic cofactor regeneration showcases its outstanding performance with NAD+ as well as NCBsox. This work significantly advances the development of photocatalytic cofactor regeneration for artificial cofactors and its potential application.

The study investigates molecular changes in the lumbosacral (L/S) spine's yellow ligamentum flavum during degenerative stenosis, focusing on the role of transforming growth factor beta 1-3 (TGF-ß-1-3). Sixty patients with degenerative stenosis and sixty control participants underwent molecular analysis using real-time quantitative reverse transcription reaction technique (RTqPCR), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), Western blot, and immunohistochemical analysis (IHC). At the mRNA level, study samples showed reduced expression of TGF-ß-1 and TGF-ß-3, while TGF-ß-2 increased by only 4%. Conversely, at the protein level, the study group exhibited significantly higher concentrations of TGF-ß-1, TGF-ß-2, and TGF-ß-3 compared to controls. On the other hand, at the protein level, a statistically significant higher concentration of TGF-ß-1 was observed (2139.33 pg/mL ± 2593.72 pg/mL vs. 252.45 pg/mL ± 83.89 pg/mL; p < 0.0001), TGF-ß-2 (3104.34 pg/mL ± 1192.74 pg/mL vs. 258.86 pg/mL ± 82.98 pg/mL; p < 0.0001), TGF-ß-3 (512.75 pg/mL ± 107.36 pg/mL vs. 55.06 pg/mL ± 9.83 pg/mL, p < 0.0001) in yellow ligaments obtained from patients of the study group compared to control samples. The study did not establish a significant correlation between TGF-ß-1-3 concentrations and pain severity. The findings suggest that molecular therapy aimed at restoring the normal expression pattern of TGF-ß-1-3 could be a promising strategy for treating degenerative stenosis of the L/S spine. The study underscores the potential therapeutic significance of addressing molecular changes at the TGF-ß isoforms level for better understanding and managing degenerative spinal conditions.

Vicinal oxygen chelate (VOC) proteins are members of an enzyme superfamily with dioxygenase or non-dioxygenase activities. However, the biological functions of VOC proteins in plants are poorly understood. Here, we show that a VOC in Nicotiana benthamiana (NbVOC1) facilitates viral infection. NbVOC1 was significantly induced by infection by beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV). Transient overexpression of NbVOC1 or its homolog from Beta vulgaris (BvVOC1) enhanced BNYVV infection in N. benthamiana, which required the nuclear localization of VOC1. Consistent with this result, overexpressing NbVOC1 facilitated BNYVV infection, whereas, knockdown and knockout of NbVOC1 inhibited BNYVV infection in transgenic N. benthamiana plants. NbVOC1 interacts with the basic leucine zipper transcription factors bZIP17/28, which enhances their self-interaction and DNA binding to the promoters of unfolded protein response (UPR)-related genes. We propose that bZIP17/28 directly binds to the NbVOC1 promoter and induces its transcription, forming a positive feedback loop to induce the UPR and facilitating BNYVV infection. Collectively, our results demonstrate that NbVOC1 positively regulates the UPR that enhances viral infection in plants.

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were greenly synthesized via a single-step hydrothermal method, using the trunks of Bauhinia purpurea as the carbon source. They exhibited good dispersibility, water solubility, high sensitivity, and great stability with a spherical form and a particle size of 2.68 ± 0.32 nm. By utilizing the inner filter effect and dynamic quenching effect, the fluorescence quenching of CQDs can be induced to detect quinoline yellow. Detailed experimental results showed that the change rate of fluorescence intensity of CQDs had a good linear relationship with varying concentrations of quinoline yellow (2-128 µmol/L). It can be clearly observed that the fluorescence quenching occurred within 1 min, its correlation coefficient (R2) is 0.9912, and the detection limit (DL) is 1.7884 µmol/L, substantially lower than the maximum concentration stipulated by the national standard of 209.5 µmol/L. Furthermore, quinoline yellow had been successfully detected in real beverage samples using CQDs, with the recovery rates of 90.6%-110.4% and the relative standard deviation (RSD) ≤ 6.3% and it also showed great anti-interference and selectivity. These findings indicate that the detected quinoline yellow of CQDs possess substantial promise for a wide range of applications within the detected artificial food colors field.

In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of Scutellaria baicalensis and Lonicerae Flos (SL) extract on the growth performance and intestinal health of yellow-feather broilers following a Clostridium perfringens challenge. In total, 600 one-day-old yellow-feather broilers were divided into five treatments (6 replicate pens of 20 birds per treatment), including a control (Con) group fed a basal diet and the infected group (iCon) fed a basal diet and infected with Clostridium perfringens, the other 3 groups receiving different doses of SL (150, 300, and 450 mg/kg) and infected with Clostridium perfringens. The total experimental period was 80 d. When the birds were 24-days-old, a subclinical necrotizing enteritis model was induced by orally inoculating the birds with 11,000 oocysts of mixed Eimeria species on d 24, followed by C. perfringens (108 CFU/mL) from d 28 to 30. The birds were evaluated for parameters such as average weight gain (AWG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), mortality, feed conversion ration (FCR), intestinal lesion score, intestinal C. perfringens counts, and villus histomorphometry. Results indicated that C. perfringens infection led to reduced AWG and the levels of tight junction proteins, increased the FCR, ileum E. coli load, and intestinal permeability, causing damage to the intestinal mucosal barrier (P < 0.05). Compared with the infected group, supplementing 300 mg/kg of SL significantly increased AWG at 43 to 80 d, the ratio of villus height to crypt depth in the jejunum and ileum at 35 d, and the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in serum. It also significantly reduced the FCR at 22 to 42 d, intestinal lesion score, and the amount of C. perfringens in the ileum (P < 0.05). Additionally, compared with the infected group, the addition of 300 mg/kg SL significantly increased mRNA levels of claudin-2, claudin-3, mucin-2, and toll-like receptor 2 (TLR-2) in the ileum of infected birds at 35 d of age. In conclusion, supplementation with SL extract could effectively mitigate the negative effects of C. perfringens challenge by improving intestinal barrier function and histomorphology, positively influencing the growth performance of challenged birds.

Background: In late 2021, Ghana was hit by a Yellow Fever outbreak that started in two (2) districts in the Savannah region and spread to several other Districts in (3) regions (Oti, Bono and Upper West).Yellow fever is endemic in Ghana. However, there is currently no structured vector control programme for the yellow vector, Aedes mosquitoes in Ghana. Knowledge of Aedes bionomics and insecticide susceptibility status is important to control the vectors. This study therefore sought todetermine Aedes vector bionomics and their insecticide resistance status during a yellow fever outbreak. Methods: The study was performed in two yellow fever outbreak sites (Wenchi, Larabanga) and two non-outbreak sites (Kpalsogu, Pagaza) in Ghana. Immature Aedes mosquitoes were sampled from water-holding containers in and around human habitations. The risk of disease transmission was determined in each site using stegomyia indices. Adult Aedes mosquitoes were sampled using Biogents Sentinel (BG) traps, Human Landing Catch (HLC), and Prokopack (PPK) aspirators. Phenotypic resistance was determined with WHO susceptibility tests using Aedes mosquitoes collected as larvae and reared into adults. Knockdown resistance (kdr) mutations were detected using allele-specific multiplex PCR. Results: Of the 2,664 immature Aedes sampled, more than 60% were found in car tyres. Larabanga, an outbreak site, was classified as a high-risk zone for the Yellow Fever outbreak (BI: 84%, CI: 26.4%). Out of 1,507 adult Aedes mosquitoes collected, Aedes aegypti was the predominant vector species (92%). A significantly high abundance of Aedes mosquitoes was observed during the dry season (61.2%) and outdoors (60.6%) (P < 0.001). Moderate to high resistance to deltamethrin was observed in all sites (33.75% to 70%). Moderate resistance to pirimiphos-methyl (65%) was observed in Kpalsogu. Aedesmosquitoes from Larabanga were susceptible (98%) to permethrin. The F1534C kdr, V1016I kdr and V410 kdr alleles were present in all the sites with frequencies between (0.05-0.92). The outbreak sites had significantly higher allele frequencies of F1534C and V1016I respectively compared to non-outbreak sites (P < 0.001). Conclusion: This study indicates that Aedes mosquitoes in Ghana pose a significant risk to public health, and there is a need for continuous surveillance to inform effective vector control strategies.

Nine biochars were produced by co-pyrolysis of sawdust and biological sludge following the "design of experiment" approach. Two kinds of sludge (both deriving from the treatment of mixed industrial-municipal wastewater) and two types of woody waste were selected as categorical predicting variables, while contact time, pyrolysis temperature, and sludge percentage were used as quantitative variables. Biochars were analysed for their product characteristics and environmental compatibility based on the European Standards (EN 12915-1:2009) for materials intended for water treatment (i.e. ash content, water leachable polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and elements), as well as for specific surface area (SSA), using them as response variables of a multivariate partial least square multiple regression, whose results provided interesting insights on the relationships between pyrolysis conditions and biochar characteristics. Biochars produced with sludge and/or providing the highest SSA values (258-370 m2 g-1) were selected to undergo a sustainable chemical treatment using a by-product of the gasification of woody biomass, complying in all cases with European Standards and achieving therefore the end-of-waste status for sewage sludge. The biochar deriving from the highest percentage of sludge (30% by weight) and with the highest SSA (390 m2 g-1) was thermally activated achieving SSA of 460 m2 g-1 and then tested for the sorption of direct yellow 50 and methylene blue in ultrapure water and real wastewater, compared to a commercial activated carbon (AC). The biochar showed Langmuir sorption maxima (Qm) 2-9 times lower than AC, thus highlighting promising sorption performances. Qm for methylene blue in wastewater (28 mg‧g-1) was confirmed by column breakthrough experiments.

Among all living beings, mosquitoes account for the highest number of human fatalities. Our study aimed to determine mosquito egg abundance fluctuation from 2015 to 2020, in order to observe which years had the highest mosquito vector densities and whether they coincided with yellow fever virus outbreaks in both human and nonhuman primates. The study area included Atlantic Forest fragments in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Studies from the Diptera Laboratory at FIOCRUZ were selected and compared along a timeline period of the field collections. The highest peak in egg abundance from the analyzed studies was observed from 2016 to 2017 and from 2015 to 2016. The lowest egg abundance was during the collection periods from 2018 to 2019 and 2019 to 2020. The species with the highest abundance throughout all the periods of the studies analyzed was Haemagogus leucocelaenus, representing 87% of all epidemiological species identified. The species with the lowest abundance was Hg. Janthinomys, representing only 1%. Monitoring the population of mosquitoes is imperative for disease surveillance, as the rise in specimens of various vector species directly impacts the occurrence of yellow fever cases in both nonhuman primates and human populations.

BACKGROUND: The increasing demand for saffron metabolites in various commercial industries, including medicine, food, cosmetics, and dyeing, is driven by the discovery of their diverse applications. Saffron, derived from Crocus sativus stigmas, is the most expensive spice, and there is a need to explore additional sources to meet global consumption demands. In this study, we focused on yellow-flowering crocuses and examined their tepals to identify saffron-like compounds. RESULTS: Through metabolomic and transcriptomic approaches, our investigation provides valuable insights into the biosynthesis of compounds in yellow-tepal crocuses that are similar to those found in saffron. The results of our study support the potential use of yellow-tepal crocuses as a source of various crocins (crocetin glycosylated derivatives) and flavonoids. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that yellow-tepal crocuses have the potential to serve as a viable excessive source of some saffron metabolites. The identification of crocins and flavonoids in these crocuses highlights their suitability for meeting the demands of various industries that utilize saffron compounds. Further exploration and utilization of yellow-tepal crocuses could contribute to addressing the growing global demand for saffron-related products.

In our study, we developed a point of care electrochemical biosensing platform based on the functionalized cysteine-positioned gold electrode to diagnose yellow fever disease from human plasma samples. The developed platform underwent characterization through diverse methods encompassing cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and density-functional theory. The capacitive interaction between yellow fever virus non-structural antigen and antibody gave a cathodic signal at approximately -260 mV, and increased in proportion to the amount of non-structural antibody. The created electrochemical biosensor has an ability to detect 96 ag/mL of the yellow fever non-structural antibody with an extensive analytical range varied from 0.1 fg/mL to 1 µg/mL. The interference effects of various substances that could be found in human plasma, and the performance of the method were examined from the point of recovery and relative standard deviation for human plasma samples; hereby, the results confirmed the unprecedented selectivity and accuracy of the proposed method.

P0 proteins encoded by the pepper vein yellow virus (PeVYV) are pathogenic factors that cause hypersensitive response (HR). However, the host gene expression related to PeVYV P0-induced HR has not been thoroughly studied. Transcriptomic technology was used to investigate the host pathways mediated by the PeVYV P0 protein to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying its function. We found 12,638 differentially expressed genes (DEGs); 6784 and 5854 genes were significantly upregulated and downregulated, respectively. Transcriptomic and reverse-transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) analyses revealed that salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA) synthesis-related gene expression was upregulated, and ethylene synthesis-related gene expression was downregulated. Ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was used to quantify SA and JA concentrations in Nicotiana benthamiana, and the P0 protein induced SA and JA biosynthesis. We then hypothesized that the pathogenic activity of the P0 protein might be owing to proteins related to host hormones in the SA and JA pathways, modulating host resistance at different times. Viral gene silencing suppression technology was used in N. benthamiana to characterize candidate proteins, and downregulating NbHERC3 (Homologous to E6-AP carboxy-terminus domain and regulator of choromosome condensation-1 dmain protein 3) accelerated cell necrosis in the host. The downregulation of NbCRR reduced cell death, while that of NbBax induced necrosis and curled heart leaves. Our findings indicate that NbHERC3, NbBax, and NbCRR are involved in P0 protein-driven cell necrosis.

This study aimed to analyze the effect of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatment on the postharvest quality, epidermal wax morphology, composition, and gene expression of Jinxiu yellow peach during cold storage. The results showed that 1-MCP treatment could maintain the postharvest quality of peach fruit as compared to control (CK) during cold storage. The wax crystals of peach fruit were better retained by 1-MCP, and they still existed in 0.6 and 0.9 µL/L 1-MCP treated fruit at 36 days. The total wax content in all the fruit increased first and then decreased during cold storage. Meanwhile, n-alkanes and primary alcohols were the main wax components. Compared to CK, 1-MCP treatment could delay the reduction of wax content during cold storage. The correlation analysis indicated that the postharvest quality of yellow peach was mainly affected by the contents of fatty acids and triterpenoids in cuticular wax. The transcriptomics results revealed PpaCER1, PpaKCS, PpaKCR1, PpaCYP86B1, PpaFAR, PpaSS2, and PpaSQE1 played the important roles in the formation of peach fruit wax. 1-MCP treatment upregulated PpaCER1 (18785414, 18786441, and 18787644), PpaKCS (18774919, 18789438, and 18793503), PpaKCR1 (18790432), and PpaCYP86B1 (18789815) to deposit more n-alkanes and fatty acids during cold storage. This study could provide a new perspective for regulating the postharvest quality of yellow peach in view of the application of cuticular wax. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: 'Jinxiu' yellow peach fruit is favorable among consumers because of its high commercial value. However, it ripens and deteriorates rapidly during storage, leading to serious economic loss and consumer disappointment. The effect of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatment on the postharvest quality, epidermal wax morphology, composition, and genes regulation of 'Jinxiu' yellow peach during cold storage was assessed. Compared to control, 1-MCP treatment could retain the storage quality of yellow peach by affecting cuticular wax composition and gene expression. This study could provide new perspective for regulating the postharvest quality of yellow peach in view of the application of cuticular wax.

Yellow nail syndrome (YNS) can induce bilateral exudative pleural effusion; however, to the best of our knowledge, no standard treatment for YNS has been established. The present study describes a patient with YNS for whom the pleural effusion was controlled by prednisolone. A 73-year-old man was referred to the University of Tsukuba Hospital (Ibaraki, Japan) complaining of shortness of breath, which was diagnosed as being due to bilateral pleural effusion. Based on the presence of yellowing and growth retardation of the toenails, lymphedema, bilateral exudative pleural fluid of unknown etiology, and lymphatic congestion on lymphoscintigraphy, the patient was diagnosed with YNS. The pleural fluid was predominantly lymphocytic and responded to systemic steroid administration [prednisolone 30 mg/day (0.5 mg/kg) for 2 weeks, with subsequent weekly tapering]. The general condition of the patient and their dyspnea also improved with treatment. These findings indicated that systemic steroid administration should be considered as one of the treatment options for patients with YNS who are reluctant to undergo chest drainage or pleurodesis due to the potential for a decrease in their ability to perform daily activities and respiratory function.

The watershed system has a complex game relationship between the benign operation and coordinated development of various elements of flood-sediment transportation, eco-environment, and socio-economy (FES). With the increasing breadth, depth, and intensity of human activities in watersheds, it is urgent to coordinate the FES. The relationship of water-sediment in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) is complex, with a prominent contradiction in water supply and a fragile ecosystem. This research tries to build a comprehensive evaluation model for FES and explore the complex interaction between FES in the YRB from 2000 to 2020. The results demonstrated that (1) the comprehensive flood-sediment transportation index (CFTI) and comprehensive eco-environment index (CEI) presented fluctuating growth. In contrast, the comprehensive socio-economy index (CSI) revealed a linear growth trend. The CFTI of Sanmenxia, CEI of Toudaokuan, and CSI of Ningxia had the highest growth rates, with 36.03%, 6.48%, and 107.5%, respectively. (2) FES's positive and negative effects were alternating, with heterogeneity in both time and space. (3) The coupling coordination degree (CCD) in the YRB indicated an increasing trend, ranging from 0.53 to 0.87, from reluctantly coordinated development to good coordinated development. The lagging subsystem was CFTI (2000-2001 and 2008-2020) and CSI (2002-2007), and the CEI was not lagging. (4) Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis (ESDA) demonstrated significant differences in the CCD of the YRB, and areas with similar CCD within the basin tend to be centrally distributed in space. At the same time, there was negative spatial autocorrelation in coordination. The results provide a scientific theoretical and methodological framework for strategic research on the YRB system's governance, protection, and management.
